DALGONA COFFEE RECIPE

DALGONA COFFEE RECIPE

How do you drink your coffee in quarantine? According to this new trend that went viral; instant and whipped.

The #dalgonacoffee trend has taken over social media lately, probably driven by people in quarantine who have more time than usual to try “new things”, or want to twist their regular coffee to look more like the one they used to buy in coffee-shops. #WeMissOurCoffeeShops!

This viral trend started in South Korea; but some people argue that this type of coffee has been around for a long time in south Asian countries like India and Pakistan.

Serving: 1 | Preparation: 10 min |

Ingredients
  •     3tsp. instant coffee granules – I used Nescafe Instant Coffee Gold
  •     3tsp. sugar
  •     3tsp. very hot water
  •     1 cup of milk (or vegetable milk)
  •     Ice cubes (for a frozen version)
  •     Cocoa powder and nutmeg for garnish (optional)
Cooking method

STEP 1
In a large bowl, pour the instant coffee granules, sugar and hot water.

STEP 2
Whisk (with a mixer if possible, otherwise with a whisk by hand – it will just be longer and will require a lot more work) the mixture, until it becomes thick, airy and paler (about 4 minutes with a mixer).

STEP 3
Fill a cup or glass halfway with ice cubes.

STEP 4
Pour milk or vegetable milk up to 2/3 of the cup/glass

STEP 5
Using a spoon, place the whipped coffee on top.

STEP 6
Optional: I sprinkled some fresh nutmeg and cocoa powder on top just to make it look pretty.

Notes
  •     This is the iced version of Dalgona coffee; for a hot version (but the whipped coffee foam will not be hot), it is possible to omit the ice cubes and heat the milk beforehand.
  •     You can also use chocolate milk!
  •     It is possible to flavor this coffee in different ways: you can add cocoa or matcha in the mixture, also spices like cinnamon, ginger, vanilla essence, etc.
  •     You can easily double the recipe to also make one for your companion or quarantine buddy.
  •     It is however not possible to substitute instant coffee powder with regular coffee or even an espresso: it does not foam!
I hope you will try this coffee and if you, please let me know how you like it!
